With over 6000 wineries across the United States, there are ample opportunities for wine lovers to tour and taste. With the addition of several new wine trails across the country in the past few years, more and more people are enjoying visits to wineries. Did you know that every state in the U.S. now has at least one winery?

Before you travel to your local winery or the nearest wine trail, consider that your wine tasting experience will involve several of your senses. To get the most from your visit, and to help you more readily identify your favorite wines for a purchase, let’s talk about how to approach wine tasting in general. And while wine tasting shouldn’t be complicated or intimidating, here are seven tips to consider …

1). Limit Your Use Of Cologne Or Perfume: These scents, while generally pleasing, will affect your ability to pick up wine aromas. In turn, this will alter your ability to judge a wine’s true taste. And, these scents will affect the senses of your fellow wine tasters as well.

2). Have A Hearty Breakfast Or Lunch: Before embarking on a wine tasting journey, be sure you’ve had something to eat, but nothing too spicy or overly seasoned. Your taste buds should be neutral, and of course you’ll want something in your stomach so you don’t get tipsy.

3). Bring Bottled Water Along: Most tasting rooms will offer water with your tastings to help cleanse your palate. But if you’re visiting more than one winery, it’s a good idea to hydrate in between winery visits. Not only will this help keep your palate fresh, but will help minimize the effect of alcohol.

4). Call Ahead: Wineries will occasionally host large tour groups, and if so, it might not be the best time for you to visit. Staff might be overwhelmed and you might not receive the attention you might otherwise expect. A quick phone call in advance will help you schedule the best time for you and the winery staff.

5). Follow The Progression: Be sure to go with the flow at the tasting counter. Wines are poured, and tasted, from light to dry to sweet for a reason. For example, if you start your tasting with a big bold red wine, it will adversely affect a light, dry white.

6). Hold The Cheese: Sometimes a tasting room will offer cheese samples along with the wine tasting. Try to hold off on the cheese, because cheese will alter your perception of the wine’s taste. You can always pair up an appropriate cheese with your favorite wine later.

7). Keep An Open Mind: You may already have a definite opinion of what types of wines you enjoy. But keeping an open mind has its advantages! Try different styles. You might find a new favorite, and it’s a great way to learn more about wine.

Just about every winery will offer you a warm, friendly wine tasting experience. Have fun, ask questions, and compare notes with friends. Wine is meant to be shared and enjoyed, and what better place to do it than at that special small winery on a scenic wine trail.

Wine is an alcoholic beverage that is made from the fermentation of unmodified grape juice. Wine is usually made from one or more varieties of the European species known as Vitis vinifera, although it can also be made from various other species or from hybrids, which are created by the genetic crossing of two different species.

There are many different types of wine, with the most major classifications being white and red, white being made from fermented white grapes and red wine obviously then being made from fermented red grapes.

Port Wine

There are various different types of wine to choose from, one of the most popular of all being port wine. Port wine is a sweet Portuguese style wine that comes from the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal. This wine is actually often served as a dessert wine, and there are several imitations of port wine that have been reproduced around the world.

Port is produced from the grapes grown and processed in the Douro region, and it is then fortified with the addition of distilled grape spirits, in order to boost the alcohol content before the wine making process is fully complete.

The Properties

Port wine tends to be, for the most part, much richer, sweeter and heavier than other wines, and as well it possesses a much higher alcohol content than most others. There are several different styles of this wine that are available, the two most major categories being reductive aging and oxidative aging.

The wines that have been matured and aged in sealed tanks or bottles with no exposure at all to air have experienced what is known as reductive aging, while the wines that have matured in barrels and which have had a small amount of exposure to oxygen have experienced oxidative aging.

Vintage Port

Although not as popular a selection of some of the other port varieties, vintage port wine is truly the flagship wine of all Portugal. It is made entirely from the grapes of a declared vintage year, and the actual decision to declare a vintage is made by each individual port house.

It tends to be more expensive than other port wines, however the flavor is also much more concrete and pungent, and so it is really worth the extra bit of money, at least once so that you can try it out for yourself.

Although it is usually paired with desserts, you can really try it out with a variety of other foods, in order to determine your own personal preferences, especially if the food is sweet.

Red wine has a long and detailed history in the world. There are basically two different types of wine – white and red – and red wine is the one which has been considered as having the most health benefits and advantages. There is a lot to learn about when it comes to red wine, and if you make yourself knowledgeable on it you will be able to make better wine choosing decisions in the future.

About Red Wine

Many studies have suggested that red wine lowers the risk of heart attack for people by up to 30 percent, and it is also suggested that it may be able to prevent future heart attacks if you have already suffered from one. Even further studies go to show that red wine is able to raise HDL cholesterol, which is the good type of cholesterol in your body.

Red wine is also thought to be able to help blood clots from forming, and to reduce the blood vessel damage caused by fat deposits.

Why Red Wine is so Healthy

There are a number of different reasons as to why the red selections of wine are so healthy, namely because it is a rich source of antioxidants flavonoid phenolics, and also contains resveratrol, which is found in grape skins and seeds, and this is the main ingredient which increases HDL cholesterol and reduces blood clotting.

However you need to realize that just because a sensible amount of wine is healthy for you, this certainly does not mean that you should start drinking as much as possible. You can easily overdo it, as only a glass of red wine a day is recommended in order to achieve any sort of health benefits.

Different Types of Red Wine

You really have a lot of options when it comes to the different types that are available, as there are right around 50 key red wines that consistently manifest themselves in today’s worldwide wine market. Red wines are best when poured into and served out of a wine glass that offers adequate room, and so you want to make sure that you have the right glasses if you are ever serving this type of wine.

There are also different varietals which work better with different types of food, and so if you are planning on serving the wine at a dinner function, you are going to make sure that you have chosen the best specific type of wine.

With so much conflicting information, it’s hard to know what you should or shouldn’t be eating and drinking to stay healthy. While there is no firm medical proof, most studies point to health benefits from drinking red wine.

What Can Red Wine Do?

While red wine isn’t considered a cure all (and certainly not a substitute for visiting your doctor), there are some widely agreed upon benefits to drinking red wine. The most promising benefit is that red wine is believed to protect against certain forms of cancer & heart disease. In fact, some studies show up to a 30%-50% reduction in heart disease of those who consumed a glass of red wine each night. It also appears to have a positive effect on cholesterol & blood pressure. And finally, drinking red wine has been shown to lower the risk of heart attacks in middle-aged (30-50 years old) adults.

Why Red Wine?

Experts started to study the benefits of red wine when they started to notice a correlation between populations who drank red wine regularly and lower incidences of disease. This was especially evident in the Mediterranean region, where red wine is plentiful. They also studied the so-called “French Paradox,” where the French have a lower rate of heart disease and obesity even though they consume a higher-fat diet. Most of the benefits of red wine come from the antioxidants present in it. Studies show that red wine has a high concentration of antioxidants, which are known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. The antioxidants have been found to increase HDL cholesterol (the good kind of cholesterol) and help prevent blood clots and plaque from forming on arteries.

How Much Should I Drink to See the Health Benefits of Red Wine?

Most experts believe that it takes very little to see the health benefits of red wine. Moderation is truly the key – one glass of wine per day for women and one or two glasses for men. Keep in mind, as well, that a glass of wine is considered to be four ounces. This isn’t to say that you should be drinking a bottle of red wine each night. In fact, most experts believe that the health benefits of red wine are lost if wine is consumed to excess. There is also the concern that those who have a family history of alcoholism or other pre-existing health conditions should not be drinking red wine. In these cases, the benefits do not outweigh the risks.

France is one of the oldest wine producing regions in Europe, and the production of wine in France actually has its origins as far back as in the 6th century BC. When it comes to French wine there are several major regions of France that are especially significant, including Alsace, Beaujolais, Bergerac, Jura, Champagne, Loire Valley and Rhone Valley.

French Wine

French wines are not industrial products, but rather they are the product of a combination of different factors, including grape variety, climate, soil and the wine grower’s care for the vineyards. There are a few different varieties of French wine in particular that are particularly significant, and which are generally separated into the black grape wine and white grape wine categories.

The black grape French wine varieties have a light colored pulp, similar to the white varieties, however it is their dark colored skin which contains the grape’s pigments and tannins which will be imparted to the wine during fertilization.

Cabernet Franc is one of the most well known black grape French wine types, and it is truly considered as being the shining star of Loire reds. This robust and early-ripening wine does not have much in common with the similar named Cabernet Sauvignon, although many people believe this is so.

The Cabernet Sauvignon French wines have become extremely well known worldwide, and they come primarily from Medoc, where the wine’s optimum expression can easily be obtained by blending it with Merlot. This wine offers a very aromatic complexity and an aging potential which is provided by its firm tannins. It is also often used to produce Vins de Pays, and is successfully fermented on the grape pulp in areas like Languedoc to produce a wine that is excellent even when consumed young.

Another of the most major French wine types is Carignan, which is a variety that has actually suffered greatly from image problems. It offers naturally high yields, and has been long used for mass produced wines and lower quality table wines. It is frost resistant and yet it must be planted in warm climates as it has a long growing season and thus may not be able to ripen fully otherwise.

France is definitely one of the most respected and predominant areas in the world when it comes to wine, and so next time you are out choosing a wine try one from the France locale and enjoy the ripened, delicious aged flavor.

For most individuals and families it is a major decision deciding you want to make your own wine. There is so much wine now available in specialty and grocery stores that you can decide your own price point and taste almost all standard varietals. For the commoner, understanding how to make wine may not be the overture to actually making ones own wine. The information you garner when learning how to make wine will enable you to make an informed decision on whether you will do a home brew or not. For the prospective wine taster or vineyard owner learning how to make wine is considered the very first step in a long and arduous path to success.

Making Wine For A Living

Millions of people are today employed by the wine industries across the world. Although it is not essential for all of these to know how to make wine, many of these learn over time or need to understand the fundamentals before beginning their careers. For the rest of the human universe learning how to make wine is one of those fun things that are done in spare time.

Wine makers today can even study how to make wine in colleges. It is indeed such a large scale industry that it is part of a lot of agricultural programs. The student not only learns how to make wine but also how to sustain the required agronomy and support their industry. With this broad of a background the future of the industry is being handed over to knowledgeable folks who recognize that care needs to be taken of the land if it is to continue to provide them a livelihood. Potential growers understand the uses of fertilizers, insecticides and other artificial products that may in fact harm us all if used inappropriately.

The Home Brew Decision

Making wine at home is an expensive proposition. Not only do you need the right materials and infrastructure such as brewing jars and fermentation traps, bottling apparatus and cleaners, you need the time to do it right. And finally as you learned, learning how to make good wine can take a lot of time and effort over a long period of time.

Good wines require good quality grapes or good quality fruits if you are to be successful. You will need to learn how these materials can be obtained in the freshest form. Over time you will learn how to make wine that one can recognize the types of fruit used and perhaps even the soils that that they were grown in. But for the beginner, your investment into learning how to make wine usually results in jug wine at best.

Wine is one of the most universally loved drinks in the world, and one of the fan favorites has to be Italian wine. Italy’s glowing reputation for wine is not only due to the fact that it is a country which produces and exports more than any other country, but as well because of how it offers the greatest variety of types, ranging through nearly every color, flavor and style that you could possibly imagine.

The vast majority of Italian wine choices are red however there are some wonderful white wines to choose from as well. Of all the different white wine options, the most well known are those from the much maligned Soave region.

The Different Regions

Italian wine is basically classified according to the region in Italy where it was made, and the classification system for Italian wine then mirrors that for French. Northern Italy is one of the most predominant areas when it comes to wine production, and the northwest of Italy is divided into four separate regions, which are: Valle d-Aosta, Lombardy, Liguria and Piedmont.

Some of the best Italian wine from this area is: Aldo Conterno, Giacomo Conterno, Enzo Boglietti, Pio Cesare, Elvio Cogno, Luciano Sandrone, and Michele Chiarlo. As well, nearby is Barbaresco, which is another red wine that is made from Nebbiolo, which is much more approachable in youth as well as more affordable as well.

The central regions of Italy are well known for what is considered as quite possibly being the best red wine of all time, Chianti. This wine hails from Tuscany specifically, which is the best known and most traveled to Italian wine region. Chianti is a red wine that is made from the Sangiovese grape, with small amounts of other grapes included, such as Cabernet Sauvigon.

In the south of Italy the production generally centers around the red wine, which often results in rivaling the wines of France in terms of interest and good value. It also offers plenty of vintage Italian wine, although it is truly impossible to generalize with regard to vintages for Italian wines, because you are dealing with such a huge and vast country.

Of all the locations in the world, Italy is definitely one of the most predominant when it comes to wine manufacturing and distribution, and some of the wines from this country are known as being the most well respected and well loved wines in the world.

Perhaps the most well known of all Italian wines is the Chianti. A wine tour in Tuscany will typically focus on that kind of wine. Therefore, in Tuscany most tours center on Florence with the result being a typical day or evening long wine tour in Tuscany. When selecting your particular tour there are two primary considerations, the first is cost and logistics, the second are the vineyards that you will be visiting.

A Tuscany wine tour typically starts around nine in the morning and ends around six in the evening. Also, the preferred ones include lunch in a unique setting as well. The prices of these tours can start at two hundred Euros and go up from there, and this price is simply for the mini-van and guide. The primary form of transportation for tours in Europe is the European styled mini-van. The more folks in the van the less expensive the tour will be on a per person basis. Some of the even better tours may actually include lunch and the wine as part of the fee. There are also evening wine tours in Tuscany. The events of wine tasting and dinner are spectacularly merged with dinner facing the vineyard. These occasions are extremely memorable for the guests attending the dinner. Of course there are all forms of wine tours in Tuscany available and may include chauffeured limousines and individualized service. The choice is, of course, all dependent on your needs and budget. The second component of the decision is the vineyard and the wine.

The Perfect Chianti

The resulting wines from the fermented grapes of the sangiovese vines in the region between Florence and Siena in central Italy are known as Chiantis. These are the primary target of the wine tour in Tuscany, though other wines might be thrown into the mix. Cabernet Sauvignon may be added to the base wine to provide additional robustness and body to the Chianti. Regardless of the form of grape, the color of the grape in Tuscany should be red, with but one or two white exceptional wines only. When selecting your tour check out the vineyard, consider its age and the size and the forms of wine being produced. The last thought on selecting your wine tour in Tuscany is the area. Depending on the time of year you arrive the scenery will vary from exciting to breathtaking as the combination of rolling hills, verdant green and purple colors dazzle your mind.

Preparing To Take The Tour

A wine tour in Tuscany should be fun, so prepare appropriately, and don’t let the occasion get you. If it is a day tour make sure you are prepared for a little hiking. If the tour is in the evening make sure you are dressed as the brochure indicates and make sure that you heed the drivers timelines or you may end up in the Tuscany hills all alone.

.
