Identity theft is a huge problem in our society today. This is a problem that is growing every year and it can have the effect of nearly destroying people’s lives. If a person is affected by this problem they need to know how to report identity theft. Also, a person should remember that this is a problem that will never be solved unless they report identity theft – keeping silent will only hurt yourself and future victims of this crime.

Steps to Report Identity Theft

There are several steps a person should take to report identity theft and protect themselves from financial harm as best as they are able to.

Report your situation to your local police department. If they do not have the ability to help you, they can refer you to someone who can. They may also be able to direct you on who you should contact (on or in addition to this list) and how to contact them.

Notify the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). You can do this via their toll-free phone number 877-IDTHEFT or via their website form at their site. This should be one of the first calls you make as the FTC can help you through the entire process.

Report the theft to your bank and credit card companies. Close all credit card and bank account that could be affected and let your financial companies know what is going on. They are far more likely to protect you further if you let them know about the theft as quickly as possible.

Notify the Social Security Administration (SSA). By letting the SSA know that your social security number has been compromised they can evaluate if you qualify for a new number and make sure that your earnings reports are still correct.

Report the theft to the Offices of the Inspector General if the theft has anything to do with buying or selling of social security numbers, or if the theft has potential ties to terrorist organizations.

The credit reporting agencies should also be on your list of companies to contact. By letting them know to look for further activity on your reports and that you are a victim of this crime you can improve your chances of recovering from this ordeal with your credit intact.

If a person does not notify all of the necessary organizations they run the risk of making their situation even more complicated. Report identity theft as soon as possible to help authorities have a better chance of apprehending the people (or persons) responsible.
